What a Cookie Is
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. On your next visit the browser sends it back, which lets the site recognize your browser. Cookies cannot run programs or carry viruses. Similar technologies, such as web beacons, pixels, and local storage, do comparable jobs, and everything on this page applies to them too.

1. Strictly necessary
These make the site work and cannot be switched off from within the site. WordPress sets them when you leave a comment or log in to the administration area. They store your comment details so you do not have to retype them, confirm that your browser accepts cookies, and keep an administrator signed in. Comment cookies last about a year; login cookies last two days, or two weeks if “Remember Me” is selected.
2. Analytics
We use Google Analytics to see which articles are read, how visitors arrive, and where people give up. These cookies record a randomly generated identifier for your browser, not your name. We read the results in aggregate. You can block Google Analytics entirely with the official opt-out browser add-on.
3. Advertising
This site is funded by advertising served through Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to limit how often you see the same ad, to measure whether an ad worked, and, where permitted, to show ads based on your previous visits to this and other websites. We do not have access to the data these cookies collect, and we cannot read them ourselves.
4. Affiliate tracking
If you click an affiliate link, the retailer, such as Amazon, sets a cookie that credits the referral to us if you later buy something. It is set by the retailer, not by us. See our Disclaimer for the full affiliate disclosure.
5. Embedded content
Pages containing embedded videos or social media posts may allow those platforms to set their own cookies, exactly as if you had visited them directly.
How to Control Cookies
- Turn off personalized advertising at Google Ads Settings. You will still see ads, but they will not be based on your browsing history.
- Opt out across many ad networks at once at aboutads.info or Your Online Choices.
- Block or delete cookies in your browser. Every major browser lets you clear existing cookies and refuse new ones, usually under Settings, then Privacy. You can also browse in a private or incognito window, which discards cookies when you close it.
Blocking all cookies will not stop you reading the articles on this site. It may mean your comment details are not remembered and that the ads you see are less relevant.
